A part of former USSR, Ukraine has impressive musical heritage. A culturally rich country, Ukrainians have always been passionate about variety of musical forms.
After the separation from USSR, the Ukrainian government started paying more attention to its music culture that was fast losing to some socio-political factors and onslaught of western music. The efforts paid handsome returns and local songs were once again flavor of the season.
One can see huge numbers of music schools spread across length and breadth of the country. The country’s cultural openness can be witnessed in its music. Several forms of appealing music can be found in Ukrainian landscape. The most prominent style of music is definitely European style of music.
The structure of the country has also helped in evolution of its music. Presence of several religious and ethnic groups has contributed in the existence of diverse range of music culture.
Ethnic groups like Germans, Russians, Armenians, Bulgarians, Greeks and Hungarians have enriched the music of Ukraine. Flavor of Slovakian and polish music is also seen in Ukrainian music. All these minorities groups have their own culture and the combined effect is nothing less than mesmerizing. Add all these diverse flavors to native Ukrainian music and one gets a totally sumptuous feast. Apart from these particular forms of music, Ukrainians are very much fond of spiritual music.
The basic ingredients of Ukrainian music are rhythm and harmony. Minor keys are preferably used in folk music. Instruments that are generally used sopilka, varghan, resheto, kobza, violin and turban. Cappella choir music is a modern day phenomenon in Ukrainian music but it has taken the whole country by storm.
In earlier eras, live performances and ballads were the rage. With changing times, country is also witnessing new genres like rock, pop, punk and electronic. Some of the popular names are, Ruslana, Volodymyr Ivasiuk, Oleksandr Ponomariov, Iryna Bilyk, Medikus, Smerichka, Sofia Rotaru and Nazariy Yaremchuk.
