Turkey is known for its diverse culture and variety it offers to the world of arts and culture. The country boasts of a rich past and heritage. It has been ruled by several different empires and each one of them left indelible marks on the history sheets of turkey.

The country was generous enough to accept all the different cultures and the result can be seen in modern day turkey. Names of the civilizations that have ruled the country are Persians, Balkans and Byzantine Empire.

Sufi songs are very popular in Turkey. Religious music of the country has been greatly influenced by Sufi sect. the artists of Turkey mixed Sufi songs with modern technology and have managed to create some eclectic tunes.

Some of the well known singers in the country are, Sezen Aksu, Tarkan and Mustafa Sandal. Country’s cultural interaction with other countries has resulted in arrival of new forms of music that are very popular amongst youths of the country. Some of the famous names in classical Turkey music read like, Dede Efendi, Prince Cantemir, Sultan Suleyman, Sultan Selim, Bulent Ersoy, Kanun, Munir Nurettin Selcuk, Efendi, Baba Hamparsum, Muzeyyen Senar, and Zekai Tunca.

Turku is the particular term given to country’s folk music. Folk music of Turkey has interesting mix of Armenian, Greek and Jew culture. Folk songs have always been extremely popular amongst the masses of the Turkey. Rural life and rural lifestyle issues are often taken as theme for folk music.

Folk music is still preferred over other genres of music during social occasions and festivals like marriage, birth and gatherings. Zulfu Livaneli, Ik Veysel and Mahsuni and Nazim Hikmet's are some renowned folk singers that command a special place in the hearts of Turkish population.

These folk songs are often accompanied by instruments like kemenche, lama, zurna, ney and darbuka. Country has remained very receptive to other genres as well. New age music like rap, hip-hop and rock songs is getting quite popular in the country.
