In the south of India, primary languages are Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Telugu. Telugu is spoken in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Andhra Pradesh is known for its rich culture and historical significance.
One common rule among all these southern states is usage of carnatic music or classical music. It is still the most used and revered mode of classical music in southern states of India.
The state of Andhra Pradesh is very crucial in context of history. It has given birth to many distinguished cultures. Also famous for its tradition that is widely respected; Telugu music arena is very rich.
If we go back to history books, Kalapam was known as the ancient form of Telugu. String of songs was used to perform Kalapam. Apart from it, Burrakatha was also very popular during earlier eras. Though, classical music is still popular in Andhra Pradesh, new age music has started to arrive in the state. Pop, rock, hip-hop, rap and film music are very popular in the region. Youths have taken a strong liking towards western music. Despite the arrival of modern technologies, classical music is still the popular form of music in Telugu music.
In recent times, songs like Kanmaniyae Kadhal Enbathu, Vedha, Salaame, Har Manzar, Naan Engae, Kadalenum, Om Arunachaleswaraya Namaha, Thiruvadi Charanam, Paruvame, Ukku kku and Arulvaayae, etc have gained massive popularity.
Some of the famous Telugu music composers are; M. M. Keeravani, Saluri Rajeswara Rao, RP Patnaik Chakri, Raghavulu, K. V. Mahadevan, Ilaiyaraaja, Koti, SP Kodandapani, Devi Sri Prasad, Mani Sharma, Pendyala, Akh Ladiye, Chakravarthy, and Vidyasagar. Famous Telugu singers include the likes of Mano, Sunitha, SPB, KK, Kousalya, Chitra, Shreya Ghosa, Nithya, Rajesh, Karthik, Ganga, SP Charan, Usha, Tippu, Malavika, Mahalaxmi, Sumangali, Mallikharjun and Kalpana. It’s a common phenomenon to see Hindi singers lending their voices to Telugu songs.
