Swahili music is very popular in umpteen parts of African continent. African countries like Burundi, Tanzania, Kenya, Somalia and Rwanda are particular fond of Swahili music. It’s a unique mix of Arabic, Indian and African music. It’s a relaxing music that has started to make a handsome impression on the big stages of world music. At some places it is also called as Tarabu. It is said that, there was a huge kingdom of Swahili and its capital was Zanzibar. From there, this music originated and took its final shape. All the social functions in the regions are accompanied by Swahili music. Swahili music produces a slow rhythm that soothes you.

One can listen to popular Swahili songs like Asembo Piny Maber, Hijazi Bashraf, Achien’g Abura, Pemba Ina Siri, Gidigidi Majimaji, Mahaba, Jamani, Yananiatile and Abana Ba Nasery. These songs are widely available on internet and a music lover can easily download these songs in a legal way. All it takes is some registration and search. Renowned Swahili bands and singers include, Simba Wanyika Band, Bi Kidude, Maroon Commandos, X Plastaz, Nairobi Matata, Nairobi Matata, Maroon Commandos, Saki Stars, Ndala Kasheba, Remmy Ongala, Culture Musical Club and Bongo Flava.

But if there is one name that truly defines Swahili music then it is of Nasibu. A Tanzanian citizen, he was a poet as well as musician who truly made Swahili music popular in other parts of the world. Nasibu is also known to collaborate with world’s other famous music personalities. He is a legend in this region.

Instruments that are normally used are, mandolin, oud, kayamba rattle, arab guitar, tambourine, three violas, cello, two udi lutes, dambak drum and earthernware drum. Most of these instruments are drums and stringed ones. The region has been quite open to other forms of music. The popular genres include, hip-hop, euro pop, reggae, benga, soukous, soul and funk.
