Street dance is a very popular form of dance in western world. It is also termed as vernacular dance. Street dance evolved to fight violent gangster activities. Dance moves like clapping hands, head movements, rigorous hand movements and stomping feet which help in releasing frustration, aggression and agitation are used in this style of dance. Street dance is indeed a wonderful means of expression to release ones emotions in a non-violent way. Street dance moves are quite fast, dramatic and powerful.
The origin of street dance cannot be traced to any particular era or any particular movement. Truly, street dance is not quite a sophisticated form of dance but it stands as a symbol to all those little lovely dance styles which originated and evolved in everyday life in places including streets and nightclubs. Street dance focuses on dancer’s own improvisation instincts. Street dance, like the name suggest is something where a dancer spontaneously starts dancing on the street and attracts and involves spectators to make it lively.
Street dance was first seen in USA in the 1970s as a part of the new age movement. Many hip hops and funk dance styles come together to form an interesting and energetic amalgamation known as street dance. Other dance forms like locking, popping, house dance etc are also a part of the same new age movement.
Street dance is very famous in many parts of the world because of its diverse use and utility. Many western schools use street dance as a means of physical education. Over the course of time, it has become more popular even with established dance studios. With the western dance forms coming steadfastly to India, Street dance is also slowly making its presence felt in Indian metros. Many young Indians can be seen eager to learn street dance.
