Serbia is a small country situated in the heart of Balkan region. The country has been a poor victim of war and animosity in the region. To some extent, its culture and great tradition was severely affected because of the continuous strife and violence. People also migrated in large numbers. But somewhere, deep down the line, music has also proved to be its savior. Once the dust after war settled down, music is what helped in soothing the nerves of anxious population.

When we talk about effects of Serbian musical tradition, we have to mention ‘Narodna Muzika’. It is the native folk Serbian music and is extremely popular amongst the masses. Like its neighbors Bosnia and Croatia, folk music rules the roost in Serbian heartland. Tradition still rules and people still prefer such form of music instead of modern songs.

Though, in recent times, trend has started to change but Narodna Muzika is the modernized form of traditional music. Apart from this hugely popular music, other name that comes to mind is Montenegro Novokomponovana and Kolo. The later one is two beat dance folk form whereas the former one covers emotional themes like love. Instruments generally used are clarinet and accordion.

Country has famous names in Balkan region. The top names consist of dZihan & KamienBoris Kovac, Saban Bajramovic and Boban Markovic Orkestar. The last one mentioned in the list is considered as a legend in Serbian music world. He gave the Serbian music it’s much awaited due on world music. His specialty was Balkan Brass Bands and Roma (Gypsy) Music. He popularized Serbian music on world stage and is also considered as the first musical ambassador of Serbia. His talents know no bounds. He is equally good at jazz and a great trumpeter.

Instruments used in traditional ethnic Serbian music have a diverse range. The moe popular ones are bagpipes, drums, trumpets, cymbals, lutes, flutes and hornspsalteries. These instruments have several sub-instruments like Gajda/Zurle, Šargija/Bouzouki/Saz, Kaval, Tambura/Tamburitza, Tapan/Davul, Gusle, Zurna and Diple.
