Russia is one of giants of the world in political, economical and military aspects. It was a part of erstwhile USSR that later got divided into several countries.
Despite the division, Russia is one of the largest countries in the world. It boasts of a proud history that spans across cultural and musical landscape. It has given world famous authors and world class composers. Some bright names that come to our mind are, Rachmaninoff, Alfred Schnittke, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Prokofiev and Stravinsky. These names gave Russian music historical significance on world map.
The old Russia had a special liking for classical music. World classical music would have been poorer without the incomparable contributions form Russian composers. For example a name like Tchaikovsky who is credited with giving us Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, two of the greatest ballets compositions of all time. Mikhail Glinka is another legend in world of classical music. His specialty was mixing up of folk and religious music with classical themes and the result was compositions like Ruslan, A life for the Tsar and Lyudmila.
Folk music is widely accepted in Russian households. Different styles of folk music like, Dagestn, Adygea, Sakha, Tuva, Altay, Tatarstan, Karelia, Bashkir and Chechnya etc are popular folk styles from different regions. Though, thing have started to change in recent times. Now a day, Russian music world is thriving with emergence of new genres like pop, rock, electronic and jazz.
Rock is the most preferred one. Some of the famous singers and bands in Russia are, Zemfira, Mumiy, Alisa, t.A.T.u, Picnic, Splean and Mashina Vremeni, DDT, Pilot and Akvarium. Heavy metal is also prefred by youths of the country. Apart from metal, punk and electronic are the recent hits. Names like PPK, DJ groove, Electrosoul System, Fizzarum, SCSI-9, Elochnyie and Solar X are new hits in the town.
