Nepal is a very small country in the neighborhood of Asian giants’ china and India. Considering the fact that Nepal has always lived in the shadow of its more powerful neighbors, it comes as a pleasant surprise to see uniqueness of Nepalese music.
Nepal has maintained its cultural legacy and its music reflects this heartening fact. Nepalese people are very fond of music and in a country marred by instability and violence, music comes as a relief and favorite vocation. Nepalese artists enjoy massive national support and traditional music is particularly popular in all the parts of the country.
Even a small country like Nepal has more than 40 ethnic groups. Such diversity is adequately reflected in its music. The widespread popularity is reflected in ubiquitous presence of music in almost all spheres of Nepalese life. It is a mode of lifestyle.
Occasions like marriage, birth, harvest, festivals, events, national dates and even funerals are accompanied by music. The most popular form of music is indigenous Nepalese music that thrives on its sub-genres like Khas and Newari.
The former one is particular heard in Khas society wheras Newari music is typical in the sense that only wind instruments are used and no string or percussion instruments are used in it.
Apart from these two, other popular forms of music in Nepal are, Magar, Sherpa, Gurung, Bhojpuri, Tamang, Maithili and Kirant. Popular songs in recent times are, Saanghuree Baree Ni, Paan Ko Paat, Simsime Paani Maa, Resham Firiri Tirtha, Banjho Khet Maa, Ganaharva, Sebru Tune, Marunee Tune (Samala) and Maachhi Mara Na etc to name a few.
In recent times, western genres are also getting popular in the country. Youths are flocking to pop, rock, hip-hop, techno, country, Latino and Punk. Rock bands and rap groups are flourishing in the country.
