Kathak dance has a proud history of hundreds of years. Kathak means Story teller. This dance form belongs to North India. Just as Bharat Natyam is completely related to south India, Kathak is similarly associated with North India. It is a dance that is performed by both male and female. The origin of Kathak is based upon mythological tales told by story tellers by accompanying musical instruments and dance in the ancient India. Temples and shrines tend to cater to those story tellers during old days.
Kathak is known as a flexible form of classical dance. It does not follow any rigid rules and conventions. Dancers are free to change the steps as their styles and situations. There is no fixed set of steps to be followed. Performers are also expected to change the aptitude in accordance with their set up. Indian has produced several prominent Kathak dancers over the years.
The basic character of this dance form is two dimensional. Kathak has complex foot work which needs to be executed perfectly. Front back treatment of dance is a treat to the eyes. Rhythmic variations often determine the undertone of the dance movements. The basic metrical cycle that is also known as tala in association with jatis or rhythmic patterns determines the execution of dance steps by the dancer.
In technical terms Kathak is separated into two major parts. The first part constitutes of nritta and abhinaya whereas the second part has Tandava and Lasya. Ganesha Vandana is an important part of Kathak dance which is performed to invocate Lord Ganesha. This particular chanting is performed using Amada. Amada also symbolizes entry of the dancer on the stage. Kathak is a mesmerizing form of classical dance. Several classes are held for teaching Kathak to willing students. The best time to teach this art starts in early age.
