Japanese classical music is segregated into two important styles of Gagaku and Shomyo. The former one is kind of orchestral court music whereas later one is Buddhist chanting. The Gagaku has further categories of folk, shintoist religious music and saibara. Nogaku is an appealing form of music. At the core of Nogaku is chorus, flute, tsuzumi drum and other instruments.
Apart from classical and folk music, other genres have also found popularity in Japan.
The modern styles that have found niches are, rock, salsa, reggae, tango, electro, rock, punk and metal. Country music is also quite popular in the country.
