Iran is considered as one of the most important countries in cultural aspect. Earlier it was known as Persia and its contribution in arts, literature and culture has greatly shaped the world. Many Middle-east countries and countries in South Asia have been significantly benefitted by advanced stages of Persian culture.
To understand the involvement of Iranian culture, we can look at its designs, architecture, miniatures, paintings and music. All these factors are so rich in themselves. Pre-Islamic history is chock-a-bloc with cultural abundance of richness and refined taste of the country.
Iranian music was always considered as an assorted mix of melodies and tunes. The themes used in the music usually cover socio-political scenarios, Iranian life, geographical events and moral issues. The tunes have remained in existence since centuries. At one point of time, Iranian music was at its pinnacle. However, post-Islamic revolution, music has lost much of its popularity and success.
The main parts of Iranian music are tribal music like Lori, Bakhtyari and Kordi. Apart from that Radif music and Mystic music are also essential components of Iranian music. Folk music is very popular in country. Instruments normally used are, wind instrument, daiyreh drum, double-reeded ghooshmeh and stringed dotar. Kurdish and classical music is also popular in some parts of the country.
Pop music was a flourishing musical form in Iran before the religious revolution changed the country’s musical backdrop forever.
Googoosh was the most popular Iranian pop singer. Apart from him, several other bands and singers made marks in musical landscape. Unfortunately, quite a few of them have to live in exile because of restrictions on music in the home country.
Some of the prominent names are, Ensemble Sarband, Anastasia Tsioulcas, Madjid Khaladj, Chemiranis, Hossein Alizadeh, Mohammad Reza Shajarian, Kayhan Kalhor, Niyaz, Sussan Deyhim, Pecheurs de perles and Masters of Persian Music etc.
