They say, India runs on cricket and bollywood. The later term refers to Hindi movie industry and it is surely incomplete without Hindi music industry.
Since the time bollywood began its journey in 1931, Hindi music industry has never looked back. 1931 signaled arrival of speaking movies where songs and dance sequences were must. Hindi is the most popular and widely spoken language in India.
In a nation filled with many communities, religions, languages and ethnic groups, Hindi acts as a binding force. Hindi songs are popular in almost all the parts of the country.
There are several genres of Hindi music. Folk, classical, devotional and film songs. Folk songs still exist and continue to go strong. Classical songs in northern parts of India are based on Hindustani classical scheme. Apart from that Bhajans (devotional songs) and Qwwalis are also quite popular and old.
Hindi music has several components. If we talk about movie songs then it is the single-most popular source of music for Indian population. Indians people are passionate about songs and Hindi songs are epitome of Indian way of living. During earlier ears, songs were more focused on lyrics and melody. Emotions used to be the primary theme.
With changing times, songs have also changed. Technologies are heavily used in songs thus rendering lyrics less effective and lifeline of songs even lesser. Some of the well known singers in Hindi music are, K L Sehgal, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammad Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Manna Dey, Asha Bhonsle among others.
Modern day singers include Udit Narayan, Kumar Shanu, Shaan, Sonu Nigam, Alka Yagnik and Sunidhi Chauhan etc.
The instruments commonly used in Hindi songs are, sitar, tabla, veena, sarod, sarangi, drums, violin, piano, mandolin etc.
Apart from Hindi film songs, new genres like pop, rock, hip-hop, punk, rap and electronic has also started to become popular.
