Greece is known for its amazing contribution to the human civilization in almost every aspect of culture. Whether its music, medicine or language, Greece has enriched the human race with its mind-blowing contributions. Greek music is represented through diverse genres and all of them have made a mark on world music stage.

The rich music of Greece shines brightly in contemporary laiko pop and Byzantine liturgical melodies that is centuries old. A music lover is sure to get mesmerized while he listens to lively nisiotika dancing music or daouli drum and double-reeded zourna. Considering the small size of the country, its contribution is definitely humungous. World would have been a poorer place without the richness of Greek music. The country has given numerous talents in the musical arena. Some of the legendary names include, George Dalaras, George Theodorakis, Manos Hatzidakis, Rosa Eskenazi, Tilak, Mikis Theodorakis, Markos Vamvakaris and Rita Abatzi etc.

Many forms of music are popular in Greece. Right from traditional ones to modern rages, country is enriched with variety of choices.

‘Rembetika’ is one of the widely heard musical forms in the country. It’s a modern form of music that is particularly popular in urban places. It’s quite similar to American Gangsta rap and its theme generally covers tribulations of individuals and society. Lyrics are primarily focused upon love, failed affairs, death, immigrants’ issues and drugs.

Popular instruments used in Greek music are, stringed lyra, bouzoukis, zorba and ouzo-soaked. Assembly of numerous cultures also gives Greek music a colorful appearance.
