Different regions in world have their own cultures. Music in other parts of the world thrives on indigenous factors. If we talk about African music, it’s totally different from what you hear in other parts of the world. Even within Africa, separate countries have their own cultures and musical tradition. All these countries have numerous tribes and ethnic groups. Even within a single country you will hear diverse range of music genres, all totally distinguished from each other. Why to go so far? Think of diversity and think of India. We can’t find a better example.

In this article, we will focus upon Ethiopian music. Ethiopia is a small country in the northern side of the continent. The primary language of the country is Amharic. People speaking Amharic language mainly reside in country’s capital of Addis Ababa. The country thrives on its folk music tradition. Ethiopia is a country with no less than 75 odd ethnic groups. That explains country’s diverse culture. It has produced many singers of repute.

One of the pioneer artists of the region was Tilahoun Gessesse who with his amazing voice and strong lyrics brought Ethiopian music to the forefront. He also garnered rave reviews on world stage. Apart from him, country has been bestowed with singers like Mahmoud Ahmed, The Idan Raichel Project, Aster Aweke, Gigi Shibabaw and Bole2Harlem etc. These singers helped in evolution of country’s music and also brought fame to the relatively lesser known country.

The singers of the Ethiopia are equally good at singing traditional as well as modern songs. Instruments like lyre, flute, and the one string fiddle have been widely used in the country’s music. Diverse range of music is popular in region. Pop, rock, hip-hop and reggae are widely preferred. There are several wonderful bands in country the likes of which include, Imperial Bodyguard Band, Ethio Stars, Yohannes Tekola's Wallias Band and Netsanet Mellesse.
