Dance music is music that is set and composed so as to facilitate a particular form of dance. This dance music can be live or it can be recorded depending upon a variety of factors such as place of the performance, type of performance, kind of audience etc. In case of live dance music, precision and care needs to be taken so as to fit the dance according to elaborate musical arrangement. It also needs a lot of practice so as to coordinate musical beats along with the dance movements.
Dance music has always been there. However, what kept on changing were the types of music and dance forms. It is the availability of dance music that helps people to choose their dance performances. While it is Carnatic music that is preferred by a Bharat Natyam performer, foreigners enjoy dancing on music that is more beats oriented such as jazz, rock and roll, waltzes, etc.
One of the best dance music is Punjabi music. Anyone can just perform a simple Bhangra dance over it. The music itself is so lively that it makes anyone go “balle-balle”. Today, Indians have started enjoying and performing on different music like trance, Cuban music etc. In India, different regions have different styles of music such as Konkani music on which people perform a distinct style of dance, Gujarati songs on which people perform Raas-garba, Rajasthan music on which people perform Rajhasthani dance etc. North Indians prefer Bhangra and Bollywood songs.
Today’s times are times of remixes. They are popular sources of dance music. Even folk songs in the country are being remixed so as to form good dance music. Using latest technologies, old songs are being recomposed to fit the modern day music trends so that even the young can groove to olden beats with a punch of some English beats.
