Croatia is another beautiful country in the Balkan region. Like, we had talked about Bulgarian and Bosnian music with touch of folk tradition; similarly Croatian music is deeply rooted in folk culture. Croatia is a very small country but the same thing does not apply to its musical tradition. Like few other countries in Balkan region, Croatia also has a special liking for polyphonic choral tradition. They say, you can take Croatian out of the country but you cannot take music out of Croatian. This statement simply shows how crazy Croatians are as far as music is concerned.
Croatia has always been famous for its wonderful cultural values and seamless flow of music in its blood veins. As mentioned earlier, polyphonic choral tradition of the country has been in existence since ages. Even with the arrival of other popular genres of music, this particular music is still preferred and loved by people of Croatia. Last two decades have remained strife-ridden for the country.
In times of adversity, music acts as a healer. They say when the famous Croatian ensemble Lado plays its songs, sadness vanishes away from the minds of the people. Few common instruments used in folk music tradition are tumburica and tamburica bands. Tamburica is more like a flute and is also the national instrument of Croatia. Played in many forms of music apart from ballads, folk songs and dance numbers, Tamburica gives a cutting edge to the songs.
Country is blessed with different genres of music including pop, rock and jazz. Some of the leading names in the Croatian world of music are, Milan Bacic, Arsen Dedic, Meri Cetinic, Zdenka Vuckovic, Miso Kovac, Vice Vukov, Tereza Kesovija, Ivo Robic, Darko Domjan, Gabi Novak, Ivica Šerfezi, and Oliver Dragojevi etc. Rock bands like Prljavo Kazaliste, Parni Valjak, Atomsko Skloniste, and Crvena Jabuka have kept youngsters hooked to their compositions.
