Bulgaria is a prominent country in Eastern Europe. Considering the size and population of the country that stands at mere nine million, it has managed to achieve great success at world music stage. It boasts of a distinctive sound that has ‘Bulgarian’ at its very core. History tells us that, culturally Bulgaria is clearly influenced from Balkan tradition. The music in this part of the Europe that also has Romania, Hungary and Serbia etc, is very rich. The tradition of music is in existence since ages and despite all the strife and other political problems, the region has thrived on its precious culture and ability to differentiate itself from others.

Bulgaria thrives on diverse genres of music that is getting played in all the parts of the country. You talk about jazz, hip-hop, rock, metal, rap, reggae or classical, the country has got it all. Folk music is another added attraction of the country. The musical gems were previously hidden in the tiny country but since the opening up of borders and other reform measures, world is now able to discover the gems.

If we have to talk about one particular music legacy of the nation, then it must be its female choral traditions. The inimitable harmonies produced by the group is unique and beyond the realm of comparison. The famous women’s choir Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares, has consistently been on top of the charts across the Europe. The choir made concept of polyphonic singing popular in the country. Apart from that, bagpipes, wooden kavel and wild welding music are other terms Bulgarian music is associated with. Instruments like kaval, gaida and gadulka are frequently used in popular Bulgarian compositions. Talking about popular singers of the country, name of Clarinettist Ivo Papasov comes to the mind.
